My years in High School with Ensemble were a great escape.
I loved singing from a young age. I loved music and the escape it provided. I loved being part of something incredibly amazing once I joined the Ensemble Choir in ninth grade. That was before I smoked like a fiend, so I was a second soprano.
I felt such an incredible sense of belonging with my classmates and the our Director was one of the most charming people I’ve ever met. He truly encouraged us to reach deep inside and bring our voices to the surface.
I was fortunate enough to take two trips to Paris with Ensemble and aside from the memories created during trip one when we took the Orient Express, and trip two when we spent what felt like an eternity on a bus, the rush of singing in one of the most beautiful churches I’ve ever seen was icing on the cake. We stayed with host families and had an opportunity to peruse the streets of Paris. There were so many beautiful sights, sounds, and smells. Those trips are deeply embedded in my memory and they gave me the strength to believe there was a world out there for me to discover away from the darkness.
It was a magical experience and a beautiful memory, because for the week we were there, I was another person, in another world, with no troubles and fears. It was a much appreciated reprieve from my every day life.
