June 14, 2017 – James Baldwin

I’ve been on a kick lately reading Baldwin’s work. It never ceases to amaze me how much I have grown through the works I have been reading over the last two-and-a-half years. I get a smile on my face realizing how important it is as a poet to read as many other poets as possible. Every time I hear about a poet on social media or word of mouth, I look them up and begin to read their work. It empowers me greatly. It helps to shape and provide growth for my own poems.
Day 13: JIMMY’S BLUES AND OTHER POEMS, by James Baldwin

No, I don’t feel death coming.
I feel death going:
having thrown up his hands,
for the moment.
I feel like I know him
better than I did.
Those arms held me,
for a while,
and, when we meet again,
there will be that secret knowledge
between us.
